Luxury Hotels in Dallas: Downtown, Harwood or Uptown

For a luxury stay in Dallas, sleep downtown at The Adolphus or in the Harwood District at Hôtel Swexan: both put you within reach of the Arts District, Klyde Warren Park and the free M-Line trolley into Uptown. Our base lists six hotels tagged luxury here, with an average guest score of 8.8 across 2,268 reviews, but they are not equal. Two carry five stars, three carry four, and one is a three-star business hotel by the I-635 freeway that I would not book for a special trip. Dallas is a driving city, so the district you pick decides whether dinner is a stroll or a ride-hail. All six list a pool, and in a Texas summer that matters more than the lobby.

Dallas does luxury as a set of districts rather than one strip: oil-era grandeur downtown, new towers in Harwood and Victory Park, restaurant terraces along McKinney Avenue, and the Galleria to the north. The common thread is heat and distance, which is why rooftop pools and good drivers matter as much as thread count.

Which district suits a luxury stay in Dallas

Dallas luxury is spread across districts a few miles apart, each with a different feel: a 1912 landmark downtown, a glass tower by Kengo Kuma in Harwood, a design hotel in the Cedars, a party-leaning Uptown address and a shopping base by the Galleria. Choosing well means choosing the district first, then the hotel.

The Adolphus is the history pick. Beer baron Adolphus Busch opened it in 1912 as a beaux-arts building modeled on a German castle, on land first planned for City Hall, and it joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It has 407 rooms, which makes it the largest of the six by far, and a temperature-controlled rooftop pool. The trade-off is the setting: downtown Dallas empties after office hours on many streets, so I would plan evenings around the Arts District or a short ride to Deep Ellum rather than expect a lively block outside.

Hôtel Swexan is the newest of the group, opened in June 2023 at 2575 McKinnon Street in the Harwood District. Japanese architect Kengo Kuma designed the 22-storey tower, which holds only 134 rooms, so it feels closer to a private residence than to a convention hotel. Its headline is a 75-foot infinity pool on the 20th floor with the Pomelo bar beside it. In our base it scores 9.1, though from just 77 reviews, the smallest sample of the six. Pick it for a couple's weekend; families wanting a big pool deck will find it intimate rather than playful.

Canvas Hotel sits at 1325 Botham Jean Boulevard in the Cedars, a former warehouse district just south of downtown. Its rooftop infinity pool faces the skyline head-on, which gives the best postcard view of any pool in this list, and the Gallery lounge shares the roof. It carries four stars, a score of 8.7 and 627 reviews, the second-largest count here. The Cedars is quieter and grittier than Uptown: interesting for design lovers and for the South Side food scene, less so if you want to step out of the lobby straight into boutiques.

Hotel ZaZa, at 2332 Leonard Street, is the Uptown address and posts the highest score in our base at 9.2. The ZaSpa handles massages and skin treatments, and the outdoor pool is small and seasonal, busiest around the Sunday DJ sessions. That tells you who it suits: couples and groups who want McKinney Avenue bars and restaurants on foot. Light sleepers should ask for a room away from the pool side on weekends. Uptown is also where the free M-Line trolley runs, which links the hotel to the Arts District without a car.

North of the centre, the Hilton Dallas Lincoln Centre faces the Galleria Dallas mall, so shopping and dining sit across the road. It has four stars and an 8.6 score from 396 reviews, and it makes sense for a business trip in North Dallas or a shopping-led weekend. The DoubleTree near the Galleria, also tagged luxury in our base, is in fact a three-star meeting hotel with 290 rooms at 4099 Valley View Lane, one block from I-635. It is comfortable and well rated, but I would not call it a luxury stay, and the drive downtown runs on the freeway.

A traveler's perspective

For a first luxury trip to Dallas I would choose Hôtel Swexan if the stay is about the room, the pool and a quiet tower, and The Adolphus if I wanted the city's grand old hotel and walking access to the Arts District. Canvas is my pick for the view and for a couple who like design over marble. I would book Hotel ZaZa only if Uptown nightlife is the plan, because that is its strength and its noise. I would skip the Galleria hotels unless shopping or a North Dallas meeting is the reason for the trip, since every evening downtown then starts with a freeway drive.

Why guests love it

Its address directly across from the Dallas Galleria mall is the main draw for families, since shopping, food and indoor space for a hot or rainy day sit across the street. The outdoor pool gives children a break back at the hotel, and rooms include coffee-making facilities and a flat-screen TV. Free WiFi is limited to public areas. Guests score it 8.6 out of 10, and I would choose it for a shopping-focused weekend in North Dallas.

Local tips

  1. 1Use the free M-Line trolley along McKinney Avenue between West Village, Klyde Warren Park and the Arts District; cars come every 17 to 20 minutes and run until midnight on Friday and Saturday.
  2. 2Avoid the State Fair of Texas weeks from late September to mid-October if you can, above all the Texas versus Oklahoma football weekend at the Cotton Bowl, when downtown rooms fill early.
  3. 3At Hôtel Swexan the 20th-floor pool is the reason to stay, so ask about pool access hours at check-in; it is a small infinity pool, not a resort deck.
  4. 4Fly into Love Field rather than DFW if your hotel is downtown, Harwood or Uptown: it is much closer to the centre, which shortens the ride on arrival.
  5. 5Downtown Dallas streets around Commerce Street go quiet after office hours, so book dinner in the Arts District, Deep Ellum or Uptown before you arrive.
  6. 6For a skyline photo from the water, choose Canvas Hotel in the Cedars: its rooftop pool faces downtown directly, unlike the towers inside the skyline itself.
  7. 7At Hotel ZaZa, request a room away from the pool if you sleep early on a weekend; the Sunday DJ sessions draw a crowd to the outdoor deck.
  8. 8If your trip is about Galleria shopping, the Hilton Lincoln Centre puts you across the road from the mall, which avoids parking and freeway traffic on the busiest days.
