Beachfront
For a beachfront hotel in the USA, choose the coast before the hotel: the word means something different on each one. Here, 51 stays in 8 towns are on the sand or face it across a promenade or a street, rated 8.66/10 on average across 41,686 reviews. Virginia Beach has 21, Lincoln City on the Oregon coast 13, San Diego 6, Honolulu 4, Corpus Christi 3, Key West 2, Tampa and St. Petersburg one each. Not all are beaches for a day in the water: Lincoln City is for beachcombing and winter storms, and the Tampa Bay and Key West stays face calm bay or Gulf water. In Virginia Beach, reached through Norfolk International Airport (ORF), oceanfront nearly always means a balcony over the Boardwalk. The promenade runs about 40 blocks, from Rudee Inlet to 40th Street, with a separate bike path, and the oceanfront hotels line the ocean side of Atlantic Avenue: between your room and the sand there is the Boardwalk, not a road. The Coastal Hotel & Suites at 2015 Atlantic Avenue (8.9/10, 2,860 reviews) gives every unit two rooms and a balcony over it. The Marriott Virginia Beach Oceanfront Resort, at 4201 Atlantic Avenue, stands just north of where the Boardwalk ends. Pick a Virginia Beach pool by the month. The Hyatt Place Virginia Beach Oceanfront (9.1/10, 1,548 reviews) has a seasonal outdoor pool, while the Hyatt House, the Capes Hotel, the Country Inn & Suites and the Four Points by Sheraton have indoor pools for a May or October weekend. The Historic Cavalier Hotel and Beach Club (9.1/10), at 4200 Atlantic Avenue, breaks the Boardwalk pattern: it stands on the inland side of the avenue, and its beach club, with an infinity pool and cabanas, is kept for hotel guests only. Lincoln City is a different trip, and it has no commercial airport: Portland International (PDX) is about two hours away by car, the last stretch on Highway 18. Its 13 stays face seven miles of public sand, from Roads End to Siletz Bay. The city's Finders Keepers programme places more than 3,000 handmade glass floats on that beach every year, in daylight, in every season, at no set time or spot: one per household per year, to register with the city. Surfland Hotel and The Coho Oceanfront Lodge have heated indoor pools, and the Surftides (7.9/10, 2,667 reviews) an indoor pool, hot tub and sauna. Two things to know before a room on the Oregon sand. Oregon State Parks tells visitors to keep one eye on the ocean for sneaker waves and to stay off any log in the surf or on wet sand, because even a small one can be waterlogged and weigh tons: with children, that is the rule to explain on the first walk. And not every hotel sits at beach level. The Inn at Spanish Head, at 4009 SW Highway 101, is built down a cliff: only two of its ten storeys show from the highway, and elevators take guests down to the rooms and onto the sand. San Diego's six, a short drive from San Diego International Airport (SAN), are beach-town stays, not downtown ones. In Pacific Beach, the Pacific Terrace Hotel (9.4/10, 619 reviews) faces the ocean from Pacific Beach Park, Tower 23 is a two-minute walk from Crystal Pier, and the Ocean Park Inn is steps from the boardwalk, near Belmont Park. Wave Crest Resort and Casa De La Playa are apartment-style, with kitchenettes and balconies. Ocean Beach is the place to go with a dog: the Ocean Villa Inn accepts pets, and the city's Dog Beach, at the foot of Voltaire Street, is leash-free 24 hours a day. In Honolulu, where flights land at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), check which kind of beachfront you are getting. The Aston Waikiki Beach Tower (9.4/10, 862 reviews), at 2470 Kalakaua Avenue, is across the avenue from Waikiki Beach, not on the sand, and its suites have full kitchens; the High Floor Luxury Oceanfront unit is rented in the same tower. The two Ilikai condos are at the western end of Waikiki, on the Ala Wai yacht harbour, where a walkway from the lobby leads to the Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon, a man-made lagoon with its own beach, and to the ocean beach beside it. On the Gulf and the bays, the word stretches furthest. In Key West, served by Key West International (EYW), The Capitana (9.0/10, 2,942 reviews, the most reviewed of the 51) and the Courtyard by Marriott Key West Waterfront are on North Roosevelt Boulevard, on the Gulf side, with a private beach area; the swimming beaches, Smathers Beach among them, are on the Atlantic side, about 2 km away. Around Tampa International (TPA) and St. Pete-Clearwater (PIE), The CURRENT Hotel has a private beach on Rocky Point, on Old Tampa Bay, and SkyBeach Resort sits at Pinellas Point by the Sunshine Skyway: bay water, not Gulf beaches. Corpus Christi's three, served by Corpus Christi International (CRP), are the DoubleTree by Hilton Corpus Christi Beachfront, the Holiday Inn Express Corpus Christi - Beachfront and the Capri Beach Hotel, which accepts pets. The DoubleTree is on North Beach, facing Corpus Christi Bay, about a 10-minute walk from the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington; the open Gulf beaches are on Mustang and Padre islands. From June 1 to November 30, the National Hurricane Center's Atlantic hurricane season, a beachfront room in Corpus Christi, Key West, Tampa Bay or Virginia Beach is what a storm reaches first: book a rate you can cancel. My verdict. For a summer swim with children, I would book Virginia Beach, right on the Boardwalk, with an indoor pool for the cool evenings, or Pacific Beach in San Diego. For a winter break, Lincoln City, for the storms, a heated indoor pool and a float hunt on the sand. In Waikiki, I would happily cross Kalakaua Avenue for the Aston's kitchens and views rather than chase a room on the sand. If what you want is white Gulf sand to swim from, the Key West and Tampa Bay stays here are not that beach: they are for a sunset over calm water.
Boutique
For a boutique hotel in the USA, pick the building and the street first, then the room. The 58 boutique hotels here are spread over 27 cities, average 8.7 out of 10 across more than 55,000 guest reviews, and 23 of them score 9 or higher. San Francisco has the most, with 7, ahead of Boston and New York with 5 each and Honolulu with 4. To be frank, the word covers very different places, from a 15-room inn in Coronado to two hotels beside Miami International Airport, so I sort them below by what you actually get when you arrive. Read the hotel's name to the end. 13 of the 58 carry a big group's collection in it: Autograph Collection and AC Hotels for Marriott, Tapestry and Graduate for Hilton, Kimpton for IHG, Unbound for Hyatt, MGallery for Accor, and Design Hotels, a Marriott Bonvoy partner for select members. In Key West, Ridley House and Ella's Cottages are Kimpton hotels with no Kimpton on the sign. You keep your loyalty points and the building keeps its identity. Smaller groups, Library Hotel Collection, FOUND and Eurostars, are not counted. For no group at all, look at Newbury Guest House in Boston or Les Artistes Inn in San Diego. Small historic houses are the ones I would cross a state for. Bradford House in Oklahoma City, rated 9.7, is a 36-room hotel built around a 1912 house with a modern addition, at NW 38th Street and Classen Boulevard in Uptown, with a wraparound porch and bikes to borrow. Hotel Marisol Coronado, 9.6, has 15 rooms at 1017 Park Place, between Orange Avenue and Coronado Beach, and breakfast is included. In Minneapolis, Nicollet Island Inn, 8.9, fills an 1893 limestone building of the Island Sash & Door Company on an island in the Mississippi. Some boutique hotels are worth booking for one feature. Inn at the Market, rated 9.2, is the only hotel inside Seattle's Pike Place Market: 76 rooms at 86 Pine Street and a rooftop deck over Elliott Bay. In New York, Crosby Street Hotel, 9.4, was the first Firmdale hotel outside London when it opened in SoHo in 2009. Kit Kemp designed its 86 rooms, and its basement screening room holds regular film nights. In Waikiki, boutique rarely means small. Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani, rated 9.1 from more than 3,000 reviews, charges no daily resort fee and has an eighth-floor infinity pool, but it has 284 rooms. Wayfinder Waikiki, 8.5, is the former Waikiki Sand Villa at 2375 Ala Wai Boulevard, a few blocks back from the beach along the Ala Wai Canal, with a 70-foot saltwater pool. VIVE Hotel Waikiki, 8.7, and Coconut Waikiki Hotel, 8.5, complete the four. If walking to the sand is the point, remember that the Ala Wai address adds those blocks each way. Key West's three are inns in Old Town rather than towers. Ridley House takes adults 21 and over only, in 23 rooms spread over three historic houses near Duval Street. Ella's Cottages has 22 rooms and cottages. Truman Hotel, rated 8.9 from 3,466 reviews, is the most reviewed of the three: it stands at 611 Truman Avenue, on US 1 a short walk from Duval Street, and has a heated outdoor pool. Parking there is charged separately, so plan for it if you drive down the Overseas Highway. San Francisco gives you the widest choice, and the trade-offs are real. 5 of its 7 boutique hotels sit around Union Square, where the cable car on Powell Street saves you the climb. Petite Auberge, at 863 Bush Street between Mason and Taylor, is a 26-room French country inn with working fireplaces in some rooms only. The rooms have no air-conditioning, the walls let noise through and the elevator is small, which matters with big suitcases. San Francisco Proper, on Market Street, has the lowest rating of the city's seven, 7.2 from 67 reviews. These hotels suit couples and solo travelers who want a lobby with character and a neighborhood to walk. Who should skip them: families who need two queens and a parking garage, and one-night road trip stops. A pool is possible but not the rule: 17 of the 58 have one, 8 in Florida and 3 in Waikiki. Ironworks Hotel Indy, rated 9.5, a new building dressed with Wisconsin barn wood and parts of a closed foundry, stands by Keystone at the Crossing north of downtown Indianapolis. For a first boutique stay, I pick Inn at the Market: you wake up above the market stalls.
Budget
Simple roadside stays cover ten cities here: Anchorage, Spokane, Reno, Glendale, Colorado Springs, Wichita, Omaha, Oklahoma City, Dallas and Plano. In practice that means the American roadside hotel: a chain property by an interstate exit or an airport, parking at the door, breakfast in the lobby, rooms with two queens or a king, and rarely a restaurant. These hotels work as a base for a car, not for walking, so I look at the exit and the frontage road on the map before I look at the photos. Three newer brands keep turning up here. Tru by Hilton was announced in January 2016 and opened its first hotel near Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City in May 2017; there is one by the Colorado Springs airport and one on US-75 in Plano. Spark by Hilton (January 2023) and Garner by IHG (August 2023) are conversion brands: older hotels renovated and re-signed, with breakfast included, as at the Spark in Glendale and the Garner in Surprise. With a new sign on an older building, I trust reviews from the past twelve months over the overall score. Two dates change these cities more than any season. In the Phoenix West Valley (Glendale, Peoria, Sun City, Surprise), Cactus League spring training in February and March fills the hotels around Camelback Ranch, the Peoria Sports Complex and Surprise Stadium. In Reno, the Hot August Nights car week (July 31 to August 9 in 2026) has its headquarters in the downtown casino resorts, so the Aiden by Best Western in South Reno keeps you out of the parade crowds. Read the address, not the name. La Quinta Inn & Suites Dallas/Fairpark is on I-30 in east Dallas, a drive from Fair Park rather than a walk. In Anchorage, the range is wide: Base Camp Anchorage is a hostel in Spenard with four-bed dorms and a wood-fired sauna, the Bird Creek Motel faces Turnagain Arm across the Seward Highway at Indian, on the way to the Kenai, and Wilderness Place Lodge is a fly-in fishing lodge on Lake Creek, about 45 minutes by floatplane from Lake Hood, nothing like a simple stay. Spokane, Wichita and Omaha put these hotels on highway corridors and arterial roads, away from the walkable centers. The Days Inn & Suites in Spokane is on North Division Street, the US-2 and US-395 corridor just north of downtown. The Aloft in Wichita is on North Oliver Street in the northeast of the city, about a mile from the Great Plains Nature Center. The Hilton Garden Inn Omaha West, at 17879 Chicago Street off US-6 near the Village Pointe shopping center, sits at the far western end of Omaha, well away from the Old Market. I would book these cities for a road-trip night, an early flight, a ballgame or a car show. I would not use them for a first city break built on walking: in Dallas I would rather sleep near a DART rail station than by a freeway, and in Anchorage the Puffin Inn, the Merrill Field Inn and the Wyndham Garden by the airport are rooms for the night before the road north, not places to linger.
Cabins
A real US cabin trip starts with a region rather than a hotel: the cabin rentals around Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge below the Great Smoky Mountains, Alaska's public-use cabins, lake and forest country in the Rockies. Of the 11 stays on this page, four actually put you in a cabin, a cottage or a floating lodge; the other seven offer hotel or B&B rooms, and five of them simply carry "Lodge" in their name, so check the room type before you book. The four real ones could hardly differ more. Brown Bear Saloon & Hotel sits in Indian, on the Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm south of Anchorage, with rustic cabins that have a stove and a fridge next to a roadhouse bar; light sleepers should know that the guest rooms above the saloon are the ones that hear it on busy nights. Wilderness Place Lodge is a fishing lodge on Lake Creek, about 70 miles northwest of Anchorage, reached only by floatplane, a flight of 45 minutes to an hour from Anchorage included in its packages; its nine private cabins each have a full bathroom. Aqua Lodges at Hurricane Hole Marina in Key West are houseboat-style units moored in the marina basin, each with a kitchenette, and tarpon and, in season, manatees swim in the basin around the units. Garden of the Gods Resort & Club in Colorado Springs adds private cottages and casitas with kitchens and outdoor fireplaces to its main building on Mesa Road. For a true Alaska cabin night I would pick Brown Bear or Wilderness Place; for the cabin feel with a resort's restaurants and spa, the Colorado cottages. Dogs and hot tubs narrow the choice further. Brown Bear and the Aqua Lodges take pets, the Aqua Lodges up to two of any size. Garden of the Gods takes one dog under 40 pounds per room, registered before check-in; ask before putting a dog in a casita, as a cottage is the safer request. A private hot tub, the classic Smokies cabin request, is something I could not find at any of the four: the hot tub at Garden of the Gods is shared with the rest of the resort. The other seven are good for other reasons: the Pacific beach at The Coho Oceanfront Lodge and Siletz Bay Beachfront Hotel in Lincoln City, Torrey Pines golf at The Lodge at Torrey Pines and Coronado Beach at 1906 Lodge in San Diego, the hospital campus at The Lodge at Duke Medical Center, the Henderson side of Las Vegas at Hawthorn Suites, and the Laguna Madre waterfront at Bluff's Landing Lodge in Corpus Christi. Two booking rules catch first-timers. Inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park the only lodging is LeConte Lodge, log cabins near the summit of Mount LeConte that you reach on foot and book by lottery; every Gatlinburg cabin is outside the park, and parking anywhere in the park for more than 15 minutes requires a parking tag. In Alaska, the Chugach National Forest's public-use cabins, about 40 of them, open on recreation.gov 180 days before the first night.
