Stays in Kansas City
Downtown and the Crossroads are where I would stay. Loews Kansas City, Kansas City Marriott Downtown, Hotel Kansas City in The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, Ambassador Hotel Kansas City, AC Hotel Kansas City Downtown, Hotel Indigo Kansas City Downtown and Holiday Inn Express Kansas City Downtown cover the center. Crossroads Hotel and Hotel Indigo The Crossroads sit in the gallery district, whose galleries open into the evening on First Fridays, the first Friday of each month, and Origin Kansas City Riverfront is the pick by the river, near the end of the streetcar line. The Plaza suits a slower stay: The Fontaine, The Raphael Hotel, Hampton Inn & Suites Country Club Plaza, SpringHill Suites Kansas City Plaza and Aloft Country Club Plaza are one streetcar ride from downtown. The Truitt, a 1916 brick mansion on Oak Street, is about a quarter mile (roughly 400 m) from the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art; it shares the top guest rating of these 28 hotels, 9.3, with Loews. North of the Missouri River, Aloft North Kansas City, Element North Kansas City and Fairfield Inn & Suites Kansas City North, Gladstone suit drivers. Orangewood Inn & Suites, the most reviewed of the 28, Drury Inn & Suites, Atwell Suites, Fairfield Inn & Suites, Tru by Hilton, SpringHill Suites and Hilton Garden Inn, all by the airport, are for a flight, not for sightseeing. Hampton Inn Kansas City Southeast and SpringHill Suites Kansas City Northeast mean a car for everything.
For a first visit without a car, stay downtown or in the Crossroads. Since May 18, 2026, the KC Streetcar, free to ride, runs from the CPKC Pavilion stop at Berkley Riverfront through the River Market, downtown, the Crossroads, Union Station, Westport and the Country Club Plaza to UMKC, so one line covers most of what visitors come for. Its riverfront end sits outside CPKC Stadium, home of the KC Current, so on a match day the same free ride takes you to the game.
Kansas City International Airport (code MCI, still called KCI locally) lies about 15 miles north of downtown, roughly 20 minutes by car. RideKC Route 229 Boardwalk-KCI links the terminal to the East Village Transit Center downtown in close to an hour, with buses about once an hour. Since June 1, 2026, RideKC buses charge a fare again, paid by contactless card or the RideKC GO app with no cash on board, while the streetcar stays free; most visitors drive or book a rideshare.
