Downtown Cleveland Hotels: Which Block to Choose
For a first trip to downtown Cleveland without a car, I would sleep on Public Square, the downtown rail hub where the RTA Red Line from Hopkins Airport ends. For a Cavaliers or Guardians game, pick the Gateway blocks on Prospect Avenue and East Ninth Street instead; for a show, the hotels along Euclid Avenue near Playhouse Square; for the Rock Hall, a Browns game or a convention, the lakefront side around Lakeside Avenue. These 18 hotels average 8.3 out of 10 across 11,084 guest reviews. Sixteen are downtown proper. Two are not, the InterContinental Cleveland and the La Quinta Airport North, and they only make sense for a specific reason.
Downtown Cleveland is a grid of old bank towers, theaters and stadiums between the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie. It fills on game nights and convention days and empties quickly after office hours, so the block you sleep on shapes your evening as much as your hotel does.
Which downtown Cleveland block suits your trip
Downtown Cleveland is compact, but its blocks do different jobs: the rail hub on Public Square, the stadiums in the Gateway District, the theaters on Euclid Avenue and the convention center and lakefront museums to the north. Choosing the right block matters more than choosing the brand.
Public Square is the block for a first visit in the cold months, with the 52-storey Terminal Tower rising above the station. Hotel Cleveland, in a 1918 building, connects directly to Tower City Center, and The Ritz-Carlton sits within the Terminal Tower complex, so in January you reach the platforms without stepping outside. On the square's Euclid Avenue corner, ROOST Cleveland fills three floors of the May Company Building at 200 Euclid Avenue with apartments that have kitchens, and Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Tower stands on the square itself.
For a Cavaliers, Monsters or Guardians night, the Gateway blocks south of Euclid Avenue put you on foot from both venues. Residence Inn Cleveland Downtown, on Prospect Avenue, has full-kitchen suites five minutes on foot from Rocket Arena. The Kimpton Schofield on East Ninth Street puts both venues within 500 metres, and Hilton Garden Inn sits on Carnegie Avenue, at the edge of the Gateway District. Hotel Indigo is on Huron Road, the street of the arena. If an older ticket or guide says Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, it is the same arena, renamed Rocket Arena in February 2025.
Theater-goers should look at Euclid Avenue. Crowne Plaza Cleveland at Playhouse Square overlooks the theater district and the GE Chandelier, the outdoor chandelier hung above Euclid Avenue, so the walk back to your room after a late curtain takes only minutes. Fidelity Hotel, on East Sixth Street near Euclid Avenue and Superior Avenue, sits between the theaters and Public Square. Comfort Inn Cleveland Downtown, farther east on Euclid Avenue, has garage parking and a free shuttle for guests, but that shuttle serves the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, not the theaters.
Conventions, Browns games and the lakefront museums pull you north of Public Square, toward Lakeside and St. Clair Avenues. Hilton Cleveland Downtown on Lakeside Avenue is about 200 metres from the Huntington Convention Center and 400 metres from Huntington Bank Field, with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame an eight-minute walk away. Drury Plaza, on East Sixth Street two blocks from the convention center, includes evening appetizers, handy on a conference week. The Westin Cleveland Downtown on St. Clair Avenue and Hampton Inn Cleveland-Downtown on East Ninth Street complete this lakefront cluster.
Two of these 18 hotels are not downtown. The InterContinental Cleveland sits on the Cleveland Clinic campus on Carnegie Avenue, east of downtown, and makes sense for a patient or a family with a hospital appointment, with the HealthLine on Euclid Avenue linking the Clinic to Public Square. La Quinta Inn & Suites Cleveland Airport North is about three miles from Hopkins Airport: useful for an early morning flight or a late arrival by car, not for exploring downtown on foot. Aloft by Marriott on West 10th Street, by contrast, is downtown, on the Warehouse District side.
A traveler's perspectiveI would book Hotel Cleveland for a first visit without a car, ahead of the newer towers on the square: nothing about the first evening needs a taxi, and it is the hotel I would most want to come back to after a day of walking. For a Cavaliers game I would switch to the Kimpton Schofield and walk to Rocket Arena. Families who want a swim after the Rock Hall should look at Drury Plaza. I would not book the InterContinental or the La Quinta for a downtown sightseeing trip: each is a ride away from Public Square, and the walkable evenings are the reason to stay downtown at all.

Local tips
- 1Ride the HealthLine east along Euclid Avenue to University Circle for the Cleveland Museum of Art: general admission to its collection is free, which makes it the easiest half-day from a downtown hotel.
- 2Cross the Cuyahoga for the West Side Market in Ohio City: the Red Line stops at West 25th Street-Ohio City station, one stop west of Tower City, a block from the market hall.
- 3For dinner before a Gateway game, East Fourth Street, the pedestrian restaurant street between Euclid Avenue and Prospect Avenue, is the closest strip to the Kimpton Schofield, Hotel Indigo and Residence Inn.
- 4Driving in? The Westin, Hampton Inn, Hilton Cleveland Downtown, Kimpton Schofield, Hotel Cleveland and Crowne Plaza park guests' cars by valet, while Comfort Inn and ROOST have garage parking; for a van or a roof box, ask the garage's height before arriving.
- 5At the Aloft on West 10th Street, ask for a lake-side room when you book rather than at the desk: only some of its rooms look north over Lake Erie.
- 6The Ritz-Carlton's 7.0 rests on only 20 reviews, too few to judge it either way, so read the most recent ones before ruling it out or booking it for its name.
